A political controversy has surfaced in Assam’s Sivasagar district after a Bharatiya Janata Party leader filed a complaint accusing a student body leader of financial misconduct, extortion, and criminal intimidation. The allegations, however, have been strongly denied by the accused, who has described the claims as false and politically motivated. The complaint was lodged at the Sivasagar Sadar Police Station against All Tai Ahom Students’ Union faction president Milan Buragohain by BJP leader Lachit Gogoi.According to the complaint, Gogoi alleged that Buragohain had borrowed a total amount of Rs 15.50 lakh from him. He claimed that although Rs 1.50 lakh was returned initially, the remaining Rs 14 lakh has not been repaid despite repeated demands and requests made over a long period of time. Gogoi further alleged that the matter became serious when he started asking for the remaining amount back. In his complaint, he claimed that Buragohain allegedly threatened him and even issued death threats during conversations related to the repayment dispute. The BJP leader also stated that he later served a legal notice through his advocate in an attempt to recover the remaining amount and settle the issue through legal means. However, according to him, no response was received from the other side after the notice was sent.
After failing to get a response, Gogoi approached the police and filed an official complaint seeking legal action in the matter.Police sources said that following the complaint, Buragohain was summoned by Sivasagar Police for questioning. Officials confirmed that he was questioned in connection with the allegations mentioned in the complaint. Sources said the police are expected to carry out a detailed inquiry into the matter before taking further steps.Speaking to reporters after being questioned by police, Buragohain denied all allegations made against him. He said there had been no financial dealings between him and Gogoi and described the accusations as “baseless” and “laughable.” Buragohain also clarified that no formal case had been registered against him so far and said that he had only been called for questioning by the police as part of an inquiry process. Questioning the timing of the allegations, Buragohain said that if such a loan transaction had actually taken place in 2023, it was unclear why the complaint had been raised only now. He claimed that there had been no communication between him and Gogoi since 2023.
Rejecting the accusation of threats, Buragohain said the allegations were fabricated. He further claimed that there could be a larger conspiracy behind the complaint, although he did not elaborate on who could be involved or what motive might be behind it.He also said that both factions of the student organisation continue to work for the welfare and interests of the Tai Ahom community in Assam. So far, police officials have not confirmed whether a formal case has been registered in connection with the complaint. Authorities said the matter is currently under investigation and further action will depend on the findings of the inquiry.
