A review-cum-coordination meeting was held in Tawang on Monday to strengthen the protection of drinking water sources supplying the township and improve waste-management practices. Tawang Deputy Commissioner Namgyal Angmo reviewed findings of a fact-finding committee and the actions taken to prevent activities that could contaminate water sources. The meeting brought together representatives from the district administration, Tawang Brigade, Border Roads Organisation, Public Health Engineering Department, education department and Monpa Mimang Tsogpa. Key discussions included proper disposal of construction waste, road-widening activities and the need for septic tanks and soak pits to prevent contamination. The Deputy Commissioner asked the Tawang Brigade to pursue a separate material recovery facility for Army waste and urged immediate action wherever sanitation infrastructure is required. Stressing responsible tourism, she directed taxi operators to ensure tourists’ waste is brought back from destinations and vehicles carry waste bins and oxygen cylinders. Awareness and warning signboards were also proposed near environmentally sensitive areas and drinking water sources. Participants also raised concerns over stray animals in market and township areas and suggested initiatives to encourage community cleanliness. As a follow-up, a mass social service and cleanliness drive from Nagula to Chuje will be conducted on August 29 by the Monpa Mimang Tsogpa in collaboration with the district administration, Tawang Brigade, BRO and market welfare committees. The meeting emphasised coordinated action among authorities, security forces, communities and transport operators to safeguard Tawang’s water sources and promote a cleaner, safer and environmentally responsible township.
