ISRO successfully conducts third earth-bound manoeuvre

Aditya L1, India's first mission to study the Sun, took pictures of itself as well as the Earth and the Moon from the high elliptical orbit around Earth where it currently resides. “Onlooker! Aditya-L1, destined for the Sun-Earth L1 point, takes a selfie and images of the Earth and the Moon,” the space agency informed in a tweet on Thursday morning. https://twitter.com/isro/status/1699663615169818935?s=20 The video posted by the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) shows an image of a portion of the spacecraft captured by its onboard camera. It features the Visible Emission Line Coronagraph (VELC) which will study the solar corona,…

Scientists find fossils that indicate existence of new species of ancient giant rhinos

Scientists find fossils that indicate existence of new species of ancient giant rhinos

Fossils of a new species, called the ancient giant rhino has been discovered in north-western China. Researchers say, it was among the largest mammals to walk on land. The Paraceratherium linxiaense, which lived some 26.5 million years ago, weighed 21 tonnes, which is the equivalent of four large African elephants. The hornless creature's head could also reach 7m to graze treetops, making it taller than a giraffe. The new findings were concluded from fossils discovered in Gansu Province. Scientists said that analysis of the fossils pointed to an entirely new species that was different to other known giant rhinos. Study…

Scientists at TESS project find 2 exoplanets orbiting a Sun-like star

A new discovery is creating a buzz in the scientific community. Citizen scientists, part of the Planet Hunters TESS project, have found two exoplanets orbiting a Sun-like star. Royal Astronomical Society lists over a dozen citizen scientists, who participated in the project led by Nasa, to have published the new discoveries. The sun-like star, dubbed as HD 152843, is about 352 light-years away from Earth and is about the same mass as the Sun But it's about 1.5 times bigger and brighter. Orbiting this massive star are two exotic worlds and, if compared to our Sun, they lie within the orbit of Mercury.…

Nasa reveals Venus missions for 2030

Nasa reveals Venus missions for 2030

With two new missions to Venus, Nasa plans to examine the planet's atmosphere and geological features. These missions are due to launch between 2028 and 2030. The missions have each been awarded $500m (£352m) in funding. Nasa administrator Bill Nelson said the missions would offer the "chance to investigate a planet we haven't been to in more than 30 years". The missions were picked following a peer-review process and were chosen based on their potential scientific value and the feasibility of their development plans. The last probe to visit the planet was the Magellan orbiter in 1990. However other vessels…

Stephen Hawking’s works to be kept in perpetuity at Cambridge University library

Prof Stephen Hawking's scientific papers and personal possessions are to be saved for the nation. The objects include childhood letters, scripts from his TV appearances and Prof Hawking's ground-breaking research into black holes. The 10,000-page archive will be kept in perpetuity at Cambridge University library. His office will be reconstructed in the Science Museum next year and selected highlights will go on display. Prof Hawking's son, Tim, said that the family was delighted that his body of work and memories of his life were being safeguarded for future generations. "Our father would be really pleased," he said. "It was really…

Einstein handwritten “Theory of Special Relativity” sells for $1.2 million

Albert Einstein's letter in which he writes out his famous E=mc2 equation has sold at auction for more than $1.2 million about three times more than it was expected to get Boston-based RR Auction said Friday. Archivists at the Einstein Papers Project at the California Institute of Technology and the Hebrew University of Jerusalem say there are only three other known examples of Einstein writing the world-changing equation in his own hand. This fourth example the only one in a private collection only became public recently according to RR Auction which had expected it to sell for about $400,000. It’s…

Here are 8 interesting locations that you could visit while visiting Mars in the future.

Mars is a planet of vast contrasts — huge volcanoes, deep canyons, and craters that may or may not host running water. It will be an amazing location for future tourists to explore, once we put the first Red Planet colonies into motion. The landing sites for these future missions will likely need to be flat plains for safety and practical reasons, but perhaps they could land within a few days' drive of some more interesting geology. Here are some locations that future Martians could visit. Olympus Mons NASA/MOLA Science Team/ O. de Goursac, Adrian Lark Olympus Mons is the…

Here’s a list of 8 strangest objects in the universe for the science lovers out there.

There's no questioning the fact that the universe is weird. Just look outside and you'll see all manner of strange, self-reproducing flora and fauna, crawling upon a blue ball of semimolten rock covered in a thin, hard shell and blanketed by a tenuous film of gases. Yet our own planet represents a tiny fraction of the peculiar phenomena that can be found lurking throughout the cosmos, and every day astronomers turn up new surprises. In this gallery, we take a look at some of the most outlandish objects in space. Mysterious Radio Signals Since 2007, researchers have been receiving ultrastrong,…
