Old Jail to Marketplace: Tripura Clears ‘Juri Haat’ for Women SHGs in North District

The Tripura Rural Livelihood Mission (TRLM) has sanctioned an Integrated Marketing Centre, named ‘Juri Haat’, at the old jail premises in Juri, marking a significant step towards promoting rural entrepreneurship and women’s economic empowerment in North Tripura district.

The project, which will be implemented by the North Tripura District Mission Management Unit (DMMU), aims to transform the former jail complex into a modern marketplace that will serve as a hub for local artisans, entrepreneurs and community activities.

Designed to provide sustainable market access, Juri Haat will offer a dedicated platform for members of Women Self-Help Groups (SHGs) to display and sell handcrafted products and locally manufactured goods. The centre will also house a coffee shop and a restaurant serving traditional Tripura cuisine, creating a unique blend of commerce, culture and tourism.

Officials said the initiative is intended to strengthen sustainable livelihoods, promote indigenous products and create new business opportunities for women-led enterprises by connecting rural producers with a wider consumer base.

Construction and renovation work at the site is nearing completion, with more than 90 per cent of the project already finished. Authorities expect the integrated marketing centre to be inaugurated shortly, making it a new destination for trade, tourism and community development in North Tripura.
