Kolkata leads India’s cat care boom as pet parenting reshapes market

Kolkata has emerged as India’s most cat-dominated pet care market, with more than eight out of every 10 cat-and-dog food orders in the city being placed for cats, according to an analysis of Instamart orders between June 2025 and June 2026. The findings highlight a broader shift from traditional pet ownership to pet parenting across the country, with pet care orders rising 41 per cent year-on-year. Cat food now accounts for nearly 60 per cent of all pet food demand on the platform and is also the most searched pet-related term. While Mumbai ranks as India’s cat capital in terms of overall demand, Kolkata stands out for the overwhelming preference for feline companions.

The report also points to changing consumer preferences beyond basic nutrition. Grain-free pet food recorded 152 per cent growth, making it the fastest-growing nutrition segment, while wet food now accounts for nearly 45 per cent of all pet food orders. Searches for dog shampoo surged 600 per cent, reflecting growing demand for grooming products. Bird food and rabbit food demand also rose sharply, increasing 178 per cent and 130 per cent respectively. In Kolkata, the city’s strong tilt towards cat care signals a unique consumer trend that could encourage pet food brands, retailers and veterinary service providers to expand feline-focused product offerings. Industry observers say Kolkata’s pet care market is increasingly driven by specialised nutrition, wellness products and premium pet services, creating new opportunities for businesses catering to urban pet parents.

Nationally, Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Delhi remain the largest pet care markets, while Tier II and smaller cities recorded 96 per cent growth in pet care orders. Guwahati, Dibrugarh, Meerut, Madurai and Kottayam emerged among the fastest-growing markets, underscoring the rapid expansion of India’s pet care economy beyond major metros.
