Assam Police has busted a cybercrime racket operating out of Azad Nagar in Barpeta Road, arresting eight accused in a coordinated operation led by the Crime Branch. According to officials, the accused were running a well-organized cyber fraud network from a rented accommodation. The house, owned by a retired army personnel identified as Kazi Lutfur Rahman, had been taken on rent by the group, who allegedly used it as a temporary operational base to carry out illegal activities. Police sources said the racket had set up a makeshift office inside the premises and was involved in siphoning off money from unsuspecting bank customers using sophisticated online fraud techniques. The operation was carried out under the leadership of ASP Samiran Baishya, who supervised the raid and arrests.
Notably, three other cybercrimes accused had already been arrested on Monday as part of the ongoing investigation, indicating the larger scale and network of the operation. During the raid, police recovered several electronic devices, including mobile phones, laptops, and documents suspected of having been used in executing the fraud. Authorities are now probing possible interstate links and expect more arrests as the investigation progresses. Further investigation is underway, and police have not ruled out the possibility of more arrests in the case.
