The newly renovated War Memorial located at the heart of Lunglei town was inaugurated by the General Officer Commanding (GOC) of 3 Corps, Lt. Gen. Abhijit S. Pendharkar, through video conferencing. Representing the GOC at the site, Commander of 23rd Sector Assam Rifles, Brig. Puspendar Sorayan formally unveiled the memorial and laid a wreath in honor of the fallen soldiers. Wreaths were also laid by Lunglei Municipal Council Chairman Lalzuithanga; District Sainik Welfare & Resettlement Officer Maj. Rebecca L. Chhakchhuak (Retd.); leaders of the Mizoram Ex-Services League; and family members of the martyrs.
A two-minute silence was observed in remembrance of the brave soldiers, accompanied by ceremonial honors.
In his address, Lt. Gen. Pendharkar highlighted that the War Memorial stands as a tribute to the courage and sacrifice of soldiers who laid down their lives for the nation. He expressed appreciation for the renovation efforts and urged that the legacy of the martyrs be remembered not only in monuments but also in the hearts of the people, inspiring unity, peace, and selfless service.
Brig. Sorayan emphasized the invaluable contributions of soldiers and reiterated Assam Rifles’ continued commitment to the welfare and development of Mizoram, including support in security, healthcare, education, and anti-drug initiatives.
LMC Vice Chairman K. Lalrinawma acknowledged the importance of the memorial for the people of Lunglei and appreciated the efforts made in its renovation. Maj. Rebecca L. Chhakchhuak noted that the memorial, originally established on land allotted by the Government of Mizoram in 1977, now consolidates the names of 108 martyrs, including 103 from World War II and five from post-Independence operations. Located at Chanmari in central Lunglei, the War Memorial serves as a lasting symbol of honor and remembrance for the fallen heroes.
