JK Lakshmi Cement breaks ground on ₹11,000-crore plant in Assam

JK Lakshmi Cement Ltd on October 30 laid the foundation stone for Project Kamakshi, its first cement manufacturing facility in Assam, with an investment of ₹11,000 crore, including the mining lease. The integrated plant is coming up at Umrangso in DimaHasao district, with Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma attending the groundbreaking ceremony as chief guest.

The proposed facility will have a cement production capacity of 2.5 million tonnes per annum (MTPA), supported by a 1 MTPA clinkerisation unit and dedicated railway sidings. Targeted for completion by FY 2029, the project is expected to create employment opportunities for more than 2,000 people and cater primarily to the Northeast market.

JK Lakshmi Cement Chairperson and Managing Director Vinita Singhania said the project would establish a long-term relationship with Assam and the wider Northeast by bringing quality cement closer to the region and supporting local employment and economic development.

In Guwahati, the plant could strengthen cement availability and distribution across Assam and neighbouring northeastern states. Local production and rail connectivity may improve supply efficiency as infrastructure development and construction activity drive regional demand. However, the project’s eventual impact on prices and competition will depend on production costs, logistics and market demand.

The expansion marks JK Lakshmi Cement’s entry into the Northeast, extending its presence beyond its established Northern, Western and Eastern markets. The company has an existing combined cement capacity of 18 MTPA and has stated its long-term goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2047.
