Instamart records 23-fold surge in gold coin orders ahead of Diwali, mithai demand rises 55%

Gold coin purchases on Swiggy Instamart surged 23-fold in the week leading up to Dhanteras, while orders for traditional sweets increased by more than 55%, reflecting strong consumer demand ahead of Diwali 2026.

According to data released by Instamart on Friday, one-gram gold coins emerged as the most preferred denomination, followed by 0.5-gram coins. Silver coin orders also increased sevenfold, with 5-gram and 10-gram denominations witnessing nearly equal demand. Bengaluru led gold coin purchases, followed by Hyderabad and Mumbai, while Delhi topped silver coin orders.

Festive shopping extended beyond precious metals, with kitchen and dining orders growing 45%, dinner set purchases surging 344% and pressure cooker orders rising 171%. Flower orders increased 42%, while demand for LED diya lights and pooja diyas rose 88% and 45%, respectively.

In Kolkata, the surge in festive shopping reflects opportunities for quick-commerce platforms amid strong demand for traditional sweets, marigold flowers, puja essentials, decorative items and household products. The city’s established festive shopping culture, particularly around Dhanteras and Kali Puja, could further support demand for convenient doorstep deliveries.

Health-conscious consumption also gained traction, with protein chip orders rising 239%, millet snacks 188% and sugar-free sweets 71%. Instamart said demand was also expanding beyond metropolitan centres, with Madurai, Mysore, Patna and Tirupati recording some of the strongest festive shopping activity.

Launched in August 2020, Instamart operates in more than 131 cities across India.
