Gauhati University has issued an official clarification regarding the use of the term “VIP Dining Hall” in tender documents related to construction work at the University Guest House, stating that the expression was used inadvertently and does not reflect the actual nature of the project.
In a statement issued by the Registrar’s Office, the University said the Guest House caters to a wide range of visitors, including members of selection committees, external examiners, viva voce experts, visiting faculty, resource persons, alumni, parents, students, delegates and guests attending academic, administrative and cultural programmes.
The University explained that with the expansion of its academic and administrative activities, the existing dining hall has become insufficient to accommodate the growing number of guests. It also noted that the Guest House kitchen, store and staff accommodation have deteriorated over the years and require urgent renovation.
To address these issues, the University Construction Committee approved the construction of a new dining hall, along with a new kitchen, store and staff accommodation at the Guest House.
According to the clarification, the term “VIP Dining Hall” was inadvertently included in one of the tender documents during the preparation process. The University said the phrase was only an unofficial internal reference historically used for visiting professors, experts and other dignitaries staying at the Guest House and was never intended to describe the scope of the project.
The error was corrected in the Letter of Intent issued on June 24, 2026, where the project was officially described as the construction of a Dining Hall at the Gauhati University Guest House.
The University also informed that it has sought an explanation from the Superintending Engineer (In-charge) of the Engineering Department regarding the inadvertent use of the incorrect terminology in the initial tender document.
The Registrar’s Office reiterated that the project is aimed solely at strengthening the common facilities of the University Guest House in view of increasing academic activities and should not be interpreted otherwise.
