First Assamese Woman Newsreader Lily Das Malik Passes Away

Lily Das Malik, one of the most iconic voices of Assamese radio journalism and a pioneering figure in public broadcasting, passed away in Bengaluru on Sunday night, family sources said. She was 90. Widely remembered as the first Assamese woman to serve as a newsreader with All India Radio, she played a defining role in shaping Assamese radio news during the golden age of broadcasting. Her mesmerizing voice and unique style of news reading endeared her to the listeners and made her a household name in the state in during the 1950s, a time when societal restrictions made it difficult for women to succeed. She was married to journalist KN Malik. Her demise has been widely mourned, with Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, AJP president Lurinjyoti Gogoi, among others, expressing grief. CM Sarma offered condolences to her bereaved family members.
