Kolkata’s iconic Eden Gardens stadium is set for a major infrastructure transformation as global architecture firm Populous unveiled an ambitious redevelopment plan aimed at turning the historic venue into a world-class sports and entertainment hub. The proposed redevelopment will increase the stadium’s seating capacity from 68,000 to 85,000 while introducing modern infrastructure focused on safety, fan experience and commercial expansion. The project includes more than 41,000 sq. ft. of hospitality space and 44,000 sq. ft. of non-match day facilities. Corporate hospitality seating is also expected to rise by 30 percent.
Built in 1864 and known as the “Home of Indian Cricket,” Eden Gardens will retain its historic identity through features such as a museum, hall of fame and digital engagement zones. The revamped stadium will also feature a Sky Deck and Sky Lounge, IPL fan zones, premium lounges, corporate boxes and a Members’ Club. Speaking on the project, Populous Principal Siddharth Soni said the redevelopment would create a “21st-century venue” while preserving the stadium’s legacy. Cricket Association of Bengal president and former India captain Sourav Ganguly said the vision was to make Eden Gardens one of the finest cricket venues in the world in terms of comfort, quality and experience.
The redevelopment is also backed by Trade and Investment Queensland, highlighting growing international collaboration in India’s sports infrastructure sector.
