‘Foreigners’ Shifted to Matia Detention Centre in Assam

On Friday, first batch of illegal foreigner shifted to the Matia Transit Camp. This camp is the country’s largest detention centre. So far 68 persons are transferred to the centre. The transit camnp is located in Goalpara about 130km west of Guwahati. Among the detainees shifted to the camp includes 45 men, 21 women and two children. They all are declared as foreigners by the quasi-judicial Foreigner Tribunals and those convicted by judicial courts of visa violations. On Sunday, 46 members of tribal militants laid down their arms after signing a peace deal with the government in Assam's Sonitpur district. The All Adivasi National Liberation Army (AANLA), formed in 2006, claims to fight for the rights of the tribal culture of plantation workers in Assam. A peace agreement was signed with the government in September last year.
