Minimum Age For Marriage Of Women From 18 To 21: Cabinet Clears Proposal

Union Cabinet on Wednesday approved the proposal to increase the age of marriage for women from 18 to 21 years, sources said. This comes a year after Prime Minister Narendra Modi made the announcement during his Independence Day address from Red Fort in August 2020. At present, the minimum age of marriage for men is 21 and for women is 18. Now, the government will bring amendments to the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, Special Marriage Act and Hindu Marriage Act to give the new proposal a shape. In the past 24 hours, India registered 7,992 new coronavirus cases and 393 deaths, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare said on Saturday. The new fatalities have increased the overall death toll to 4,75,128. The recovery of 9,265 patients in the same period has increased the cumulative tally to 3,41,14,331.
