Indian football team captain Sunil Chhetri on Friday said the flood-hit northeastern state of Assam needs immediate attention and assistance as it battles loss of lives and displacement of people in many of its submerged districts. According to Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), 3,218 villages and localities in 27 of the state’s 33 districts are still affected by flooding on Assam. Nearly 4 million people continued to be affected by floods in Assam on Thursday, which saw five more deaths due to drowning-taking the tally this season to 71. Assam flood situation worsens, 3.4 lakh affected in 14 districts.

The flood situation in Assam deteriorated on Friday as vast areas of two more districts were inundated, affecting 1.70 lakh more people, the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) said in a report. It said 3,41,837 people of 32 revenue circles of 14 districts are now affected by the deluge. The two new districts where floodwaters entered since Thursday are Udalgiri and Dibrugarh. This flood and landslides have claimed 64 people's lives so far across the state with 40 having been killed in incidents related to the deluge and 24 dying in landslides. GUWAHATI: The state health minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, while addressing a press conference this afternoon, announced a 14-day lockdown in Kamrup Metro. The lockdown would be implemented with stricter rules this time in view of public safety.No grocery essentials, meat, fish or vegetable stores will be allowed to open for the first 7 days of the lockdown; however, these would be exempted from the lockdown 7 days later.
