Assamese cinema mourns loss of Purabi Sharma, wife of Tapan Das

An illustrious chapter in Assamese cinema has come to an end. Veteran actress Purabi Sharma, who won the hearts of millions through her long career in films and television, passed away on Tuesday at around 7:30 PM after suffering a cardiac arrest. She was rushed to the hospital after falling ill, but doctors declared her dead.

Her mortal remains were brought to her residence in Santipur, Guwahati. After family members, co-artists, fans and dignitaries from various fields paid their last respects, the last rites were performed at the Navagraha crematorium.

One of the most popular faces of Assamese cinema, Purabi Sharma began her film career with ‘Ajoli Nobou’. Her early film ‘Ragini’ went on to win a National Award, bringing great pride to Assamese cinema.

In later years, she delivered memorable performances in several films including ‘Prabhat’ (2022). Alongside films, she also acted in numerous television serials including ‘Gateway’, earning popularity across generations of viewers.

Purabi Sharma worked alongside leading artists of Assamese cinema including Kulada Kumar Bhattacharya and remained actively associated with the cultural sphere till the very end. She was a regular presence at events like the Filmfare Awards Assamese and Prag Cine Awards. She also featured alongside heartthrob Zubeen Garg in the music video ‘Jowa Bosore’.

Along with her acting career, her married life with eminent actor, playwright and director Tapan Das was also highly respected in the Assamese cultural world. The contributions of both to Assamese theatre and cinema remain memorable even today.

Purabi Sharma’s demise has cast a shadow of grief over the Assamese film and television industry. Her acting, personality and dedication to the arts will remain a lasting memory in the history of Assamese culture.
