Assam’s Minister for Health Family Ashok Singhal on Monday visited flood-affected areas, relief camps and health institutions in Charaideo and Sivasagar districts to assess the health condition of flood-affected people and review the ongoing relief, rescue and healthcare measures.
The visit began with an inspection of the No. 1 Parachani Habi Flood Relief Camp in Charaideo district, where the Minister interacted with the displaced families and enquired about their well-being.
He reviewed the healthcare services being provided at the camp, including medical consultations, distribution of medicines, disease prevention measures and the overall preparedness of healthcare personnel.
Thereafter, he travelled by inflatable boat to the flood-affected Chumoni area under Tengapukhuri, where he assessed the flood situation firsthand, interacted with local residents and reviewed the progress of rescue, relief and healthcare activities.
Subsequently, the Minister visited the Lakshminagar Flood Relief Camp in Nazira and the Betbari-Alimur Flood Relief Camp under Dimow Assembly Constituency in Sivasagar district.
He enquired about the health condition of the flood-affected families and reviewed the availability of healthcare services, medicines, safe drinking water, sanitation facilities and disease prevention measures at the camps. He also interacted with the camp inmates to understand their concerns and requirements.
Later, Singhal visited the Dimow Model Hospital, where he inspected various departments, including the Outpatient Department (OPD), and reviewed the healthcare services and infrastructure available at the hospital.
He interacted with patients and their family members to obtain feedback on the quality of healthcare services.
The Minister also chaired a review meeting with the hospital’s Deputy Superintendent, Dr. Rupam Barkakati, senior doctors and other officials to discuss measures for further improving the quality of patient care and healthcare delivery.
During the hospital visit, the Minister held a detailed discussion with Dr. Surajit Giri on the hospital’s successful management of snakebite cases and its achievement of maintaining zero mortality due to snakebite. He also reviewed the infrastructural gaps and operational requirements of the hospital and assured that necessary steps would be taken at the earliest to address the deficiencies and strengthen healthcare services.
Speaking to the media after the visit, Shri Singhal stated that the Government of Assam is closely monitoring the flood situation and has taken all necessary measures to ensure uninterrupted healthcare services in the affected areas. He said that doctors, healthcare workers, mobile medical teams, essential medicines and other medical supplies have been deployed adequately, and the Government will continue all necessary relief and healthcare interventions until the situation returns to normal.
