The Government of Assam has ordered the closure of all educational institutions in Guwahati on Monday after heavy rainfall triggered flash floods across the city, affecting normal life and movement. The decision applies to both government and private schools and colleges within the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) area. Officials said the step was taken keeping in mind the safety of students, teachers and staff as large parts of the city remained waterlogged following intense rain on April 19.
According to the administration, several localities reported severe waterlogging, leading to traffic disruption and difficulties for commuters. Roads in low-lying areas were submerged, slowing down movement of vehicles and affecting daily activities. In some areas, residents also faced problems due to clogged drains and rising water levels. Authorities said the situation is being closely monitored and relief measures are underway. Emergency teams have been deployed in vulnerable areas to manage the situation and assist residents where needed. The administration has urged people to remain alert and avoid unnecessary travel until conditions improve.
The order to shut educational institutions has been issued under provisions of the Disaster Management Act, which allows authorities to take preventive steps during emergencies. Officials said such measures are necessary to reduce risks during extreme weather events.
