Yashoda Hospitals Hitec City cures Assam patient’s rare achalasia with advanced POEM

Yashoda Hospitals, Hitec City, has restored the quality of life of a 42-year-old man from Assam after performing a complex POEM (Per Oral Endoscopic Myotomy) procedure to treat a rare form of Type 1 Achalasia with Sigmoid Esophagus. The successful procedure was carried out on October 21, 2025, bringing relief to patient Chand Mia, who had suffered for nearly 10 years. He experienced severe difficulty swallowing both solids and liquids, along with chest pain, night-time regurgitation, and chronic cough. Multiple medical evaluations earlier had revealed a grossly dilated esophagus with food retention, but a definitive treatment solution could not be found.

As his health worsened over the past six months, he was referred to Yashoda Hospitals for expert intervention. After a complete medical evaluation, the hospital’s gastroenterology team led by Dr. K. S. Somasekhar Rao, Senior Consultant Gastroenterologist & Hepatologist, and Dr. Naveen Polavarapu, Senior Consultant Liver Specialist & Gastroenterologist, performed the POEM procedure. Dr. Rao said, “Achalasia is a rare esophageal motility disorder, and in advanced cases with a sigmoid-shaped esophagus, treatment becomes highly challenging. POEM is a minimally invasive and effective procedure that offers excellent long-term outcomes.”

The hospital said that Mr. Mia is recovering well with significant improvement in swallowing. Yashoda Hospitals continues to expand advanced therapeutic endoscopy and minimally invasive gastrointestinal treatment for patients across India.
