A new report by Godrej Agrovet Limited, in collaboration with the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad (IIMA) and Godrej DEI Lab, has revealed that while women constitute 64.4% of India’s agricultural workforce, only 6-10% are employed in top agri-related companies. The findings were launched at the second Women in Agriculture Summit, highlighting key gaps and proposing strategies for gender inclusivity in the sector.
Balram Singh Yadav, Managing Director of Godrej Agrovet, emphasized the need for mentorship, skill alignment, and inclusive work environments. “Last year, we pledged to support 100,000 women across the agri value chain, and we have already impacted 20,000 women through training, safe workspaces, and leadership opportunities,” he said. The report calls for gender-responsive training, equitable resource access, and workplace reforms to enhance women’s participation. At the event, Godrej Agrovet also launched a Women in Agriculture Scholarship to support female students in agricultural studies.
In Guwahati, a key agricultural trade hub, experts believe addressing gender disparities could improve agribusiness efficiency. Local traders stress that more women in leadership roles could drive better market access and sustainable farming practices, benefiting the entire supply chain. The summit also featured panel discussions with industry leaders on breaking barriers for women in agriculture and enhancing leadership roles.
