The vibrant Viraasat Special Handloom Expo was officially inaugurated today at Mahavir Dharm Sthal, Fancy Bazar, Guwahati. The week-long event, running from January 8 to 14, 2025, was launched by Jayant B. Mangalpalli, Assistant Director (Design), Ministry of Textiles, Development Commissioner (Handloom), WSC Guwahati.
Organized by the Ministry of Textiles, Government of India, the Expo celebrates India’s rich handloom heritage and serves as a platform for weavers to showcase their craftsmanship. In his inaugural address, Mangalpalli emphasized the importance of sustainable and ethical fashion, urging support for handloom traditions that have been a part of India’s culture for centuries. He also highlighted the role of such events in connecting artisans with buyers, ensuring fair trade and recognition.
The Expo features a diverse range of handloom products, including Banarasi, Jamdani, Muga, and Mekhela Chador, among others, with live weaving demonstrations offering visitors an insight into the artistry behind these textiles. The event aligns with the Ministry’s #MyHandloomMyPride campaign, aiming to strengthen the weavers’ economy and promote India’s unparalleled textile heritage. In Guwahati, the Expo provides a unique opportunity to connect consumers with the craftsmanship of traditional weavers, offering a wide range of high-quality handloom products for the city’s discerning shoppers. The event, which runs daily from 11:00 AM to 8:00 PM, is free for all visitors.
