Vi-Meta partnership signals growing demand for secure digital authentication

Vodafone Idea (Vi) and Meta have launched Silent Mobile Verification (SMV) capabilities for Vi users across WhatsApp, Facebook and Instagram, a move that reflects the increasing focus on secure digital authentication and fraud prevention in India’s expanding digital economy.

The network-based authentication technology enables users to verify their mobile numbers in the background without manually entering OTPs, switching applications or waiting for verification messages. The solution supports key user journeys such as new user registration, mobile number validation, login and re-login, account recovery, and authentication during security checks.

Market participants view the launch as a significant development in India’s digital infrastructure landscape, where trusted authentication solutions are becoming increasingly important amid rising online activity and cyber fraud concerns. By validating verification requests directly through Vi’s telecom network, SMV aims to deliver faster onboarding, fewer manual steps and stronger protection against phishing and digital identity risks.

Abhijit Kishore, CEO of Vodafone Idea Limited, said the partnership with Meta enables safer digital experiences at scale while reducing fraud risks. Arun Srinivas, Managing Director and Country Head, Meta India, described network-based authentication as an important step toward making verification simpler, seamless and more secure for users across Meta platforms.

The launch is also being seen as a milestone in the evolution of telecom network APIs and trusted digital infrastructure. Vi said it plans to expand such capabilities across additional applications, ecosystem partners and advanced trust-based use cases, including enhanced authentication and intelligent risk-based verification solutions.
