Assamese singer Samar Hazarika, younger brother of legendary music icon Bhupen Hazarika, passed away late Monday night at his residence in Nijarapara, Guwahati. He had been suffering from prolonged illness for some time, family members said.
The news of his death came on Uruka, a day traditionally associated with joy and celebration, but it instead brought grief to the cultural circles of the state. Artists, music lovers and well-wishers expressed deep sorrow over the loss of a singer who remained closely tied to Assamese musical traditions.
Samar Hazarika began his journey in music in 1960 and gradually built a quiet but respected presence in the industry. Over the years, he lent his voice to several Assamese films and recorded multiple albums, contributing to the growth of regional music during a crucial period. Though he largely stayed away from public attention, his work was known for its simplicity and emotional depth.
People who worked with him remember Samar Hazarika as a humble person who believed music should touch hearts rather than chase fame. His calm personality and dedication earned him respect among fellow musicians.
