On World Meningitis Day, health experts are emphasizing the critical importance of vaccination in preventing this life-threatening disease, which significantly impacts children. Meningitis, characterized by inflammation of the protective membranes around the brain and spinal cord, can be caused by bacterial, fungal, or viral infections. With over 2.5 million people affected globally each year, and nearly 70% of fatalities occurring in children under five, the need for awareness and vaccination is urgent.
India ranks among the top three countries for meningitis-related deaths, particularly concerning strains like Neisseria meningitidis, which can have a fatality rate of up to 50% without treatment. Dr. Bikramjit Das, a pediatrician at Bhagirathi Neotia Woman & Childcare Centre in Kolkata, stresses, “Vaccination is our most effective defense against meningitis.” He urges families to prioritize immunization, especially for high-risk groups.
In Kolkata, the vaccination campaign has gained momentum, with health officials urging parents to ensure their children receive the recommended doses. The city’s market for healthcare products, particularly vaccines, is expanding, reflecting a growing recognition of preventive healthcare. The World Health Organization aims to eliminate bacterial meningitis epidemics by 2030, making today’s efforts vital for safeguarding future generations.
