The University of Western Australia (UWA) has announced a major scholarship initiative through UWA India, marking one of its biggest standalone commitments in the Indian education sector. The move aims to make globally recognised education more accessible for Indian students from diverse academic, socioeconomic and regional backgrounds. Announcing the initiative, UWA Vice-Chancellor Professor Amit Chakma said the scholarship program reflects the university’s long-term commitment to India and its focus on expanding access to quality international education. “We are ensuring that financial constraints do not limit ambition. Our goal is to empower talented students across India to prepare for global careers,” he said.
Applications for UWA India are now open. The university, with campuses in Mumbai and Chennai, will offer undergraduate and postgraduate programs in STEM, business and technology fields aligned with global industry demands and India’s evolving workforce requirements. The scholarship framework includes merit-based scholarships, global excellence scholarships, equity and CSR-supported funding, alumni-backed scholarships and State Government co-funded opportunities, initially in Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu. Eligible students may also combine multiple forms of financial support.
In Kolkata, the initiative is expected to generate strong interest among students seeking international education opportunities at reduced costs, particularly in technology and business-related disciplines. UWA said scholarships will be included from the first intake, with the framework to be reviewed after its first year.
