Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) Chief and United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL) president Pramod Boro said that his party has decided to contest all Assembly seats in the Bodoland Territorial Region in the upcoming Assam Assembly elections. He also said the party plans to contest a few constituencies outside the region, based on what he described as clear public opinion in favour of a wider electoral presence.
Speaking about the party’s election plans, Boro said the decision was taken after listening to people across Bodoland. According to him, party supporters and the general public want the UPPL to take part actively in the Assembly elections rather than limiting itself to local governance. “People’s opinion is clear that UPPL should contest the election. Therefore, we have decided to contest the elections on all seats in Bodoland and a few outside,” he said.
Boro also made it clear that the UPPL is open to alliances and is currently holding talks with different political parties. He said discussions are ongoing to explore possible seat-sharing arrangements that would be acceptable to all sides. “We are open for alliance and we will discuss it with other political parties,” he added.
At the same time, Boro said the party continues to remain in alliance with the Bharatiya Janata Party at the state and national levels, at least until the Model Code of Conduct for the elections comes into force. He noted that talks are being held not only with the BJP but also with other parties as part of the consultation process.
However, the UPPL chief said the party is fully prepared to contest the elections on its own if alliance talks do not lead to a final agreement. “At the same time, we are prepared to contest alone if the situation demands,” Boro said, indicating that the party is keeping all options open.
The UPPL emerged as a major political force in the Bodoland Territorial Region after the signing of the Bodo Peace Accord in 2020. Since then, the party has been leading the Bodoland Territorial Council administration.
