UPPL Faces Pre-Poll Exodus as Key Leaders Quit to Align with BPF

In a significant political shift ahead of the Assam Assembly elections, key figures from the United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL) have resigned, indicating a realignment in Bodoland politics as they prepare to join the Bodoland People’s Front (BPF). Notably, Kampa Borgoyary, a Member of the Legislative Council in the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) and former Leader of the Opposition in the BTC Legislative Council from the UPPL, has stepped down. His departure is seen as a crucial blow to the UPPL due to his influence in the Bodoland Territorial Region. In his resignation letter addressed to UPPL president Pramod Boro, Borgoyary expressed his inability to continue engaging in party activities, thanking the leadership for his enriching experience as Vice President and expressing confidence in Boro’s leadership for the future of the party.

The resignations of other prominent figures, including UPPL Vice President Maothi Brahma Hazowary and Central Secretary Afzal Khan, further underscore this trend. Hazowary has also resigned, contributing to the ongoing turmoil within the UPPL, while Khan’s resignation letter, dated March 1, 2026, echoed sentiments of withdrawal from party activities and gratitude towards the party leadership. Both are expected to join Borgoyary in the BPF, suggesting a coordinated exit strategy as the Assembly elections approach. The UPPL’s leadership response remains pending, but these exits are significant given the party’s position in the ruling alliance in Assam and its considerable clout in the Bodoland Territorial Region. Political observers are closely monitoring these developments, which may have substantial implications for the upcoming elections and the political landscape of Bodoland.
