ULFA (Independent) has claimed responsibility for “Operation Bujoni,” a military-style attack on an Assam Police commando camp in Tinsukia district on March 22. The group indicated that it had previously refrained from armed activities following the 2021 Assam Assembly elections, acting on a “goodwill decision” in light of perceived peace overtures from Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s government. However, ULFA accused the police of breaching this understanding, citing the deaths of its members in alleged “fake encounters” and custodial actions, alongside arrests of its supporters under stringent laws. The group cited a recent drone and missile strike on its camp under the Unified Command Structure as a trigger for its retaliation. ULFA holds state leadership accountable for these military operations, alleging ongoing efforts by security forces to undermine the organization through arrests and coercion. While asserting that it does not view the Assam Police as enemies, the outfit warned of possible escalation if actions against its members continue, emphasizing the importance of de-escalation to avoid worsening conflict.
