ULFA-I rebel Arunjay Bora joins Assam’s peace efforts

In a significant development in Assam’s fight against insurgency, United Liberation Front of Asom-Independent (ULFA-I) cadre Arunjay Bora, alias Ujjal Asom, has surrendered before the Tinsukia police. Bora, a resident of Tekeri village in Pengeri, laid down arms at Ritukathalguri on February 25, marking the end of his association with the banned militant outfit. According to reports, he had joined ULFA-I in 2018 and remained active in the outfit for several years. His surrender is being seen as a step forward in the security forces’ continued efforts to dismantle insurgent networks and reintegrate former militants into society. The Assam Police and security agencies have been working extensively to curb insurgency and encourage more cadres to abandon the path of violence.

Authorities believe that Bora’s decision to surrender may inspire other active militants to return to the mainstream. Over the past few years, several insurgents have laid down arms as the state government intensifies efforts to restore lasting peace in Assam. The surrender comes at a time when security forces are maintaining strict vigilance in Upper Assam, particularly in districts like Tinsukia, Dibrugarh, and Sivasagar, which have witnessed insurgent activities in the past. Officials are optimistic that such developments will further weaken ULFA-I’s influence in the region.

Security forces have reiterated their commitment to ensuring peace and stability in Assam while also offering rehabilitation programs for surrendered militants. Bora is expected to undergo de-radicalization and reintegration processes as part of the government’s efforts to provide a new beginning for former insurgents.
