ULFA-I issues ultimatum to BJP leader in Assam

The United Liberation Front of Asom-Independent (ULFA-I) has escalated tensions in Assam by issuing a stark ultimatum to BJP leader Gauravv Somani. The militant group demands the immediate withdrawal of an FIR filed by Somani against Bir Lachit Sena leader Shrinkhal Chaliha. The complaint, lodged at the Dispur Police Station, accuses Chaliha of inciting communal tensions based on language and race, potentially undermining Assam’s peace and harmony. In a press statement released Monday, ULFA-I warned of severe consequences if the FIR is not retracted. The group has issued a stern warning that any resulting unrest will be directly attributed to the Assam Police’s actions. Furthermore, ULFA-I hinted at possible adverse repercussions for the broader non-Assamese community in the state due to Somani’s actions.

In response to the growing threats, Assam’s Director General of Police (DGP) Gyanendra Pratap Singh condemned the militant group’s actions, describing the bomb threat on August 15 as an attempt to disrupt the state’s progress. “The state has seen considerable advancement and development. Yet, some factions aim to halt this progress through violent acts like bombings,” Singh stated. He reassured that the Assam Police is committed to maintaining law and order and will thoroughly investigate and address the threat. “We are dedicated to swiftly apprehending those responsible for such disruptions,” he affirmed. Singh also urged the youth to steer clear of unlawful activities, noting that some young individuals are misled into participating in such extremist actions.

ULFA-I had previously claimed responsibility for planting bombs at 25 locations across Assam, intended to detonate between 6 a.m. and 12 p.m. on Independence Day. Due to technical failures, the bombs did not explode as planned. The Assam Police have since recovered explosives from several sites, including Guwahati. A Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been established to thoroughly probe the incident and ensure justice.
