Uber has expanded its operations to 100 more cities across India, including Gangtok, taking its overall footprint in the country to 225 cities.
The expansion, covering 18 states and one Union Territory, will be powered primarily by Uber Bike and is aimed at strengthening affordable mobility and first- and last-mile connectivity in smaller cities. The company said the expansion would also create flexible earning opportunities for thousands of local drivers.
In Gangtok, Uber Bike will offer commuters an additional option for short-distance and everyday travel, particularly in navigating traffic and connecting with other modes of public transport.
In Gangtok, the entry of Uber could add a new dimension to the city’s evolving mobility ecosystem, offering residents, students and visitors app-based transport options. The service may also create earning opportunities for local two-wheeler owners while catering to the city’s tourism-driven travel demand and daily commuting needs.
Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari welcomed the expansion, saying improved road connectivity and new mobility solutions could unlock economic and livelihood opportunities in smaller cities.
Uber India and South Asia Director for Consumer and Growth Rishant Ghosh said the expansion reflected growing demand for convenient and affordable mobility beyond major metros.
The company said new riders across the country would be offered their first Uber ride free for a limited period, subject to terms and conditions. Uber Bike trips will also include in-app safety features such as Realtime Driver ID Check, SOS assistance and trip-sharing options.
