Two-thirds of Gen Z and millennials are first-time pet parents in India: Mars study

A groundbreaking survey by Mars Petcarereveals that over two-thirds of Gen Z and Millennials in India are first-time pet parents, signaling a profound shift in the country’s pet ownership dynamics. The Global Pet Parent Survey, which included responses from 20,000 participants worldwide, highlights the emotional bonds between young Indians and their pets, with 68% of Gen Z dog owners and 71% of cat owners viewing their pets as integral to their lives.

The study shows that pets are seen as stress-relievers and companions, with over 64% of young dog owners and 60% of young cat owners in India reporting reduced anxiety due to their pets. However, adoption rates remain low, with only 6% of puppies and 4% of kittens adopted from shelters, indicating the need for greater awareness about responsible pet ownership.

In Kolkata, pet care products and services have seen a significant uptick in demand. Pet-friendly cafes and adoption drives are becoming popular, reflecting a shift in urban culture towards embracing pets as family members. Businesses in the city are increasingly catering to this growing segment, showcasing Kolkata’s evolving pet care ecosystem. Salil Murthy, Managing Director of Mars Petcare India, emphasized the company’s commitment to fostering a better world for pets through initiatives like National Adoption Weekends and mobile shelters. The study underscores the growing importance of pets in Indian households, shaping a compassionate future for pet care.
