In a tragic and mysterious incident, two schoolgirls who had gone missing were found dead in a pond in Assam’s Kokrajhar district on Thursday.
The deceased have been identified as Anamika Bara, a Class 9 student, and Charita Lakra, a Class 8 student. Both were students of Dholmara High School.
According to reports, the girls were returning home from school when they went missing. Their families became worried after they failed to return home and immediately launched a search for them.
During the search operation near a pond in the area, the caretaker, identified as Gola Mostafa, allegedly advised locals to search elsewhere, claiming that the girls might have eloped.
Later, at around 1:30 pm, the bodies of the two schoolgirls were recovered from a pond located inside a tea garden in Dholmara.
Police said the girls’ bicycles and sandals were also found abandoned near the edge of the pond, raising suspicion about the circumstances surrounding their deaths.
Locals informed the police and alleged that the caretaker might have been involved in the incident, citing his behaviour during the search operation. Based on the complaint, police arrested Gola Mostafa.
Residents have also demanded the arrest of another individual identified as Ijazahan Ali and called for a thorough investigation into the case.
The incident has further raised questions regarding the security arrangements inside the tea garden area.
