Truecaller unveils free AI voicemail in India, targets spam calls and expands local language support

Truecaller has launched a free voicemail service for Android users in India, integrating AI-powered transcription and automatic spam protection. The feature allows users to receive, record and store voice messages directly on their device, eliminating the need to dial voicemail numbers or remember PIN codes.

The company said the new voicemail experience places privacy and convenience at the centre of voice communication, as messages are stored on-device. The service supports transcription in 12 Indian languages, including Hindi, Bengali, Gujarati, Tamil, Urdu, Punjabi, Nepali and Sanskrit, offering personalisation for diverse user bases. According to Truecaller, users can set up unlimited voicemail in seconds through the app. The system filters spam, categorises calls, and enables adjustable playback speed. “Traditional voicemail was built for a very different era of communication,” said Truecaller CEO Rishit Jhunjhunwala, adding that the platform aims to build “a more inclusive, intuitive, and trustworthy communication layer.”

In Guwahati, digital calling tools and spam protection features have seen rising adoption as smartphone penetration grows in the Northeast. Local telecom users often face high spam and scam call rates, making AI-enabled voicemail and instant transcription a potential draw for students, professionals and small businesses seeking safer and more convenient communication tools. With voicemail positioned at the centre of its calling experience, Truecaller is reinforcing its anti-spam strategy and daily-use platform ambitions.
