A suspicious message, an unfamiliar phone number or a link asking for urgent action can leave people wondering whether they are being targeted by a scam. Truecaller has now launched Scam Checker, a new service designed to help users make that assessment before responding.
Available on Android in India and globally through the Truecaller website, the platform brings several scam-checking capabilities together in one place. Users can check a web link for signs of malicious or phishing activity, look up a phone number using Truecaller’s detection systems and community signals, and search Scamfeed reports for similar scams reported by other users.
Users can also describe their concern in their own words and receive relevant results, including checks on links or numbers mentioned in their query and related community reports.
Truecaller said the service brings together three common elements of a suspicious message — a phone number, a link and the story behind the request — enabling users to examine them within seconds.
“People often sense that something is wrong, but they need a quick way to check before responding,” said Rishit Jhunjhunwala, CEO of Truecaller.
The service draws on scam intelligence from Truecaller’s community of 500 million users. The company plans to expand coverage of scam techniques, add screenshot uploads for richer analysis and introduce user authentication. Additional markets and iOS support are planned for a later date.
