TRAI finds wide variation in mobile network performance across Sonitpur

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has assessed mobile network quality across parts of Sonitpur district under the Assam Licensed Service Area (LSA), recording significant variations in coverage, call performance and data speeds among telecom service providers.

The Independent Drive Test (IDT), conducted from August 10 to 13, 2026, covered 308 km of city routes, 10 hotspot locations and 1.6 km of walk tests. The exercise, conducted under the supervision of TRAI’s Regional Office, Kolkata, assessed voice and data services across 2G, 3G, 4G and 5G networks.

According to the findings, Reliance JioInfocomm (RJIL) recorded the highest average download speed at 221.18 Mbps, followed by Airtel at 116.11 Mbps, Vodafone Idea (VIL) at 20.04 Mbps and BSNL at 11.72 Mbps. Airtel recorded an average upload speed of 21.09 Mbps, followed by RJIL at 15.98 Mbps, VIL at 6.69 Mbps and BSNL at 4.32 Mbps.

The test recorded no dropped calls for Airtel and RJIL, while BSNL reported 301 dropped calls out of 476 successfully established calls and VIL recorded eight drops out of 312.

The assessment covered areas including Tezpur, Dhekiajuli, Thelamara, Rangapara and surrounding locations, besides key hotspots such as Tezpur Medical College and Hospital, Tezpur University and the ASTC Bus Stand.

TRAI said the findings have been shared with the respective telecom service providers for necessary action. Detailed IDT reports have been made available on the TRAI website.
