Toonsutra, India’s leading digital comics platform, has announced a major expansion of its AI-powered localisation capabilities by adding five new Indian languages — Bengali, Marathi, Gujarati, Kannada and Malayalam. With this move, readers in these languages will get access to premium, best-selling international comics for the first time. With the addition, Toonsutra now supports 10 languages — Hindi, Bengali, Marathi, Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu, English and Bahasa Indonesia — covering native speakers of over 1.5 billion people across India and Southeast Asia. The platform’s full catalogue of more than 3,200 premium titles will now be available in these languages.
Vishal Anand, Co-founder and CEO of Toonsutra, said the company built its AI localisation engine to ensure language does not become a barrier to storytelling. Developed in partnership with Google’s AI Futures Fund, the proprietary system translates not only text but also visual context, character voice and cultural nuances within speech bubbles.
The five newly added languages represent over 450 million people, including around 230 million Bengali speakers globally. Toonsutra currently has over 2 million monthly active users and is backed by Google’s AI Futures Fund, Holtzbrinck and Sony Innovation Fund. In Kolkata, the launch is significant. With Bengali being one of the most widely spoken languages in the region and a strong tradition of literary readership, the availability of international comics in Bengali is expected to attract young digital consumers and expand Toonsutra’s footprint in eastern India’s growing online entertainment market.
