Tinsukia Police, Indian Army uncover major explosives stockpile linked to ULFA-I

In a major breakthrough for security forces, Tinsukia police and the Indian Army have recovered nearly 30 kg of explosives from the Digboi Reserved Forest during a meticulously planned joint operation. The explosives were unearthed from a hidden location, raising concerns over potential militant activities in the region. According to official sources, the stockpile was buried almost a year ago by Nabajit Asom, a former militant of the proscribed United Liberation Front of Asom – Independent (ULFA-I). Asom, who recently surrendered, provided crucial intelligence that led the security personnel to the concealed cache. The explosives were found buried approximately 500 meters from the Dibru River, a remote location within the forest area.

Security forces retrieved the explosives from eight polythene bags, a tiffin box, and a bucket, indicating that the cache had been carefully concealed to evade detection. Following the recovery, bomb disposal squads were deployed to safely handle the explosives and prevent any untoward incidents. Investigations are currently underway to determine if more such stockpiles exist in the region and to identify any possible networks involved in storing and distributing these materials. Authorities suspect that the recovered explosives were meant for insurgent activities, possibly targeting security installations or critical infrastructure. Assam has witnessed periodic militant-related incidents, and such recoveries highlight the continued vigilance required to maintain peace and stability.

The successful operation underscores the coordinated efforts between law enforcement agencies and the armed forces in tackling insurgency and preventing potential threats to public safety. The Assam government has reiterated its commitment to eliminating extremist elements and ensuring that the state remains free from violence and unrest. Meanwhile, local residents have expressed relief over the security forces’ success in preventing any possible attacks. “This recovery shows that the authorities are actively working to keep us safe. We hope they continue their vigilance to prevent such threats in the future,” said a resident of Tinsukia.
