Households and businesses in the Darjeeling district now have a structured way to recycle their used beverage cartons, thanks to a partnership between Tieedi Permaculture Foundation and Tetra Pak. The initiative aims to formalize waste workers, provide them with training and healthcare support, and ensure responsible recycling of aseptic beverage cartons.
Tieedi, an environmental organization focused on zero-waste solutions, has teamed up with Tetra Pak, a global leader in food packaging, to establish a decentralized collection and recycling system. Used cartons will be collected through a network of waste workers and community volunteers before being sent to KhatemaFibres in Uttarakhand for recycling. Waste pickers will receive training in efficient segregation and access to a structured recycling network, increasing their income and social recognition. Youth from Sonada Degree College will assist in data collection and research.
The initiative holds significance for Darjeeling, where waste management has been a persistent challenge due to tourism and commercial activities. With increased participation, local businesses can play a crucial role in ensuring responsible disposal of beverage cartons, contributing to cleaner streets and a sustainable recycling ecosystem.
UtsowPradhan, Founder of Tieedi, hailed the project as a milestone in waste management, highlighting the long-overdue recognition of waste pickers. Juhi Gupta, Sustainability Director, Tetra Pak South Asia, emphasized that the collaboration sets a precedent for decentralized, community-driven waste management solutions in the region.
