Three in four heart patients in India now under 50, TATA AIG survey reveals

A nationwide survey conducted by TATA AIG General Insurance has revealed a worrying trend of younger Indians facing serious heart conditions. According to responses from nearly 300 cardiologists, 74% reported that a majority of their heart patients are under the age of 50, with 36% in the 31–40 age group and 38% aged 41–50. Stress, unhealthy diets, and sedentary lifestyles were identified as key drivers.

The survey also highlighted alarming patient behavior. Nearly 78% of doctors said patients often ignore chest pain, fatigue, and breathlessness—the primary early warning signs of heart issues. Over 60% noted that patients typically seek treatment only after substantial heart damage occurs, while 59% reported that fewer than 40% of patients are financially prepared for advanced cardiac care.

In Guwahati, the trend mirrors national patterns. Local cardiologists observe that younger residents are increasingly reporting cardiac symptoms, yet early check-ups remain limited. Rising awareness has slightly boosted demand for preventive consultations and insurance coverage, but financial preparedness for costly procedures remains low among families in the city. Mr. Rajagopal Rudraraju, Senior EVP at TATA AIG, emphasized the dual challenge: “India’s cardiac crisis is both medical and financial. Comprehensive insurance and preventive care are critical to ensure timely treatment and protect families.”
