An official announcement announced the export of a significant consignment of Dalle Chilly, which is tagged as a Geographical Indication (GI) in Sikkim, to Solomon Islands. Dalle Chilly, sometimes called Fire Ball Chilly or Dalle Khursani, is well-known for its strong pungency, vivid red color, and high nutritional content. It is abundant in potassium and vitamins A, C, and E. Mevedir purchased the most recent export, weighing roughly 15,000 kg, from farmers and Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs) in South Sikkim. These farmers have been able to obtain a premium price of Rs 250-300 per kg thanks to the GI tag, which is significantly higher than the typical market price of Rs 180-200 per kg.
The economic advantages of GI certification and the potential for global trade are reflected in this price increase. This export represents a growing acknowledgement of Sikkim’s agricultural superiority in global markets, and Geographical Indication labels assist to protect the quality and uniqueness of region-specific products. In addition to providing financial support to local farmers, the successful export of Dalle Chilly raises awareness of Sikkim’s agricultural products abroad, highlighting the state’s high-quality food and rich agricultural legacy.
Meanwhile, Meghalaya’s unique ginger gained international recognition earlier this month when it was formally introduced to the Dubai market. Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma highlighted the significance of this for the state’s agricultural exports in a post on his X account. Eight farmers from Meghalaya made the first move into the Dubai market when they traveled there to learn about international marketplaces and trading methods. This program not only demonstrates the high caliber of Meghalayan ginger but also gives the farmers access to information about international trading practices.
