Assam is preparing to add a major new landmark to its sports infrastructure as Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma will inaugurate the Assam Cricket Association’s (ACA) newly constructed cricket stadium in Umrangso on December 5. The hill town of Dima Hasao, known for its scenic beauty and calm surroundings, will now host one of the most modern cricketing facilities in the Northeast.
The stadium has been built on 30 bighas of land allotted by North Cachar Hills Autonomous Council Chief Executive Member Debolal Garlosa. The ACA, which had first conceptualised the project four years ago, initially explored Haflong for the venue but could not find suitable land. The plan was later shifted to Umrangso, where the terrain and availability made the project feasible without disrupting the region’s ecological balance. Officials said the construction followed the model of stadiums in Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, and England, ensuring harmony between sports infrastructure and natural landscapes.
BCCI General Secretary Devajit Saikia, who recently visited the site for an inspection, said the stadium is complete with a 15,000-capacity gallery and five dedicated practice pitches. He confirmed that ACA and BCCI will now be able to host domestic cricket tournaments in the district, making Umrangso an emerging cricket destination for teams from across India.
Saikia noted that for years, players from Dima Hasao practiced and competed on a football ground in Haflong due to the absence of proper cricketing facilities. The new stadium, he said, will provide young talents with a full-fledged venue to train, compete, and grow. “Dima Hasao has many promising youngsters, and we are confident that future cricket stars will emerge from here,” he remarked.
