Tension flared in Tripura’s Baramura Hills late on Sunday night after members of a surrendered faction of the National Liberation Front of Tripura (NLFT) blocked the Assam–Agartala National Highway, alleging that the government had failed to fulfil long-pending demands promised under their surrender agreement. According to the group, several assurances made by the government at the time of their surrender remain unimplemented despite repeated representations to the administration. Left with no alternative, they said, they resorted to blocking the national highway to draw attention to their grievances.
The blockade caused severe inconvenience to the public, with the movement of both passenger and goods vehicles coming to a standstill. From late night until early morning, a large number of vehicles were stranded on both sides of the highway, resulting in long queues stretching from the Baramura Hills to Hawaibari. On receiving information, a large contingent of police personnel and senior administrative officials rushed to the spot. After prolonged discussions with the protesters, the administration assured them that their demands would be conveyed to higher authorities and that efforts would be made to resolve the issues at the earliest. Following the assurance, the NLFT members withdrew the blockade.
Normal traffic movement was gradually restored after the road was cleared. However, the incident has raised fresh concerns over security and stability in the Baramura Hills region. The local administration has stepped up surveillance in the area and is closely monitoring the situation to prevent any further unrest.
