Swine fever takes serious turn in Darrang

In Darrang district, the African Swine Fever (ASF) outbreak has gotten worse despite the efforts of the veterinary clinic and district government. 60 pigs from two farms in Kabikara village under the Niz Dahi veterinary facility were killed by the veterinary department in front of the Executive Magistrate. “The infected pigs were killed in the presence of Executive Magistrate Tanmoy Bora in accordance with the department’s established official norms,” stated Dr. Ajay Bania, Mangaldai’s veterinary officer overseeing the culling procedure.

At Mangaldai Revenue Circle’s Village Kamarpara, 104 sick pigs were killed earlier on June 7. Dr. Bania added that the department has been keeping a close eye on commercial pig breeding farms and has taken blood samples right away if any pig is thought to be diseased. He stated that frequent deworming of the cattle and disinfection of the farm’s environs could prevent the disease’s infestation, which typically manifests itself in May and June each year. The Darrang District Administration has declared Kamarpara and Kabikara villages as epicentres for ASF, imposing restrictions on their inhabitants.

Infected zones include restrictions on pig transport, sanitization certificates, and preventing pigs from being moved out. Surveillance zones follow similar restrictions, with continuous surveillance and forest department surveillance. Local authorities are required to assist veterinary officers in enforcing these directives under the Animal Disease Act. Dead animal disposal in water bodies is strictly prohibited and punishable by law.
