Subansiri Lower Dam Begins Power Generation After 20 Years

After two decades, the Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project has commenced power generation, synchronizing its first unit with the national grid. Managed by NHPC, this 2,000-MW project features eight units of 250 MW each, with expectations to bring three more units online this month and complete the project by March 2027. The initiative, conceptualized in 2005, faced delays due to protests and legal challenges over safety and ecological concerns, leading to expert recommendations for structural enhancements. The reservoir’s capacity is 1,365 million cubic meters, contributing to flood management and projected annual renewable energy generation of 7.421 billion units. Assam will benefit from an additional 300 MW of power, with Arunachal Pradesh receiving 12% free power. The total project cost has increased to approximately ₹26,000 crore.
