Students Choose Kindness Over Celebration, Spend New Year with Elderly

The Sikkim Students’ Association Delhi (SSAD) welcomed the New Year in a simple and meaningful way by visiting the Earth Saviour Foundation, an old-age home in Delhi. Instead of celebrations and parties, the students chose to spend time with elderly residents, sharing conversations, care, and warmth. The home is known for supporting senior citizens who need help, dignity, and companionship. Members of SSAD and other student groups spent the day talking with the elders, listening to their life stories, and offering friendly company. For many residents, the presence of young students brought happiness and relief from loneliness. The students said that the visit reminded them of the value of respect and kindness toward senior citizens.

The programme also included cultural dance performances, which added colour and cheer to the day. The elders enjoyed the performances, and the atmosphere turned light-hearted, with smiles and laughter shared across generations. This outreach event was organised under the Himalayan Alliance (2026), which brings together student organisations from Sikkim, Ladakh, Lahaul & Spiti, Arunachal, along with the NGO Flowering Dharma. The joint effort highlighted unity, cooperation, and social responsibility among young people from different regions.

The theme of the event was “Spreading kindness wherever you go.” The organisers said that beginning the New Year with compassion felt special and meaningful. By choosing to celebrate with the elderly, the students showed that festivals and occasions can also be moments of giving and sharing. The visit also served as a reminder that many senior citizens feel isolated and simply need company and respect. The students hoped that more people, especially youth, would come forward to support the elderly and make them feel included in society.
