Students approach SC seeking cancellation of Class board exams in Assam

A group of students of Assam Higher Secondary Education Council (AHSEC) and Board of Secondary Education, Assam (SEBA) have petitioned the Supreme Court on Monday to cancel state board examinations for Class 10 and 12. Students cited the cancellation of CBSE Class 12 board exams as a strong ground to back their demand.

Thousands of students took to Twitter via #CancelAssamBoardExams to voice their concerns even as the state government signaled that it would conduct the exams in July-August. The intervener plea has been signed by four students and filed by Supreme Court advocate Abhishek Choudhary on the Public Interest Litigation (PIL) on the board exams that was filed by Anubha Srivastava Sahai. More than 20,000 students have signed online petition in support of this.

The decision made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi had underlined the need to ensure the safety and security of students amid a raging pandemic. Many other state boards too followed suit. However, Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the state will conduct board examinations in mid-July if the Covid-19 positivity rate in the state drops below 2% by July 1.
