Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal today laid the foundation stone of playground development works at Majuli ME Parijat High School, Ratanpur Miri High School and Selek Janajati High School in Majuli under Chief Minister Samagra Gramya Yojna. The Chief Minister also formally handed over the sanction letters of Sports Department worth Rs 20 lakh each to the school authorities.
He also distributed power tiller, roofing sheets and solar lamps among the beneficiaries under schemes of Plain Tribes Development Project.
Speaking at the programme held at Majuli ME Parijat High School, the Chief Minister stressed on the need to shape the young generation of the state as disciplined citizens through sports while informing that 500 playgrounds in the state have been taken up for upgrading under Yuva Vikash Mission. 9 schools have already been provided funds for developing their playgrounds in Majuli, he informed.
Saying that sports instill a competitive spirit among the youth, Sonowal highlighted the importance of competitive spirit to excel in academics, cultural activities etc. He also informed that the state government has decided to hold rural Olympics in Assam so that the hidden sporting talents in rural areas can be identified and provided advanced training for bringing laurels at state, national and international levels. He said that there were lots of sports talents in Majuli and the state government was striving to spot them while also developing sports infrastructure.
