In a monumental milestone for India’s commercial space sector, Skyroot Aerospace successfully completed its first orbital launch as the Vikram-1 rocket placed its payloads precisely into Low Earth Orbit. The critical mission, aptly named Mission Aagaman, lifted off from the historic Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota following a brief planned technical hold. The multi-stage vehicle, towering nearly seven storeys tall, functioned flawlessly across all four propulsion stages to deliver a textbook launch and subsequent deployment sequence on its very first try.
The successful flight marks the first time an Indian private aerospace enterprise has independently developed and flown an orbital-class rocket capable of satellite delivery. Constructed with an all-carbon composite airframe and featuring advanced 3D-printed liquid engines alongside high-thrust solid-fuel boosters, Vikram-1 showcases major strides in indigenous aerospace engineering. The orbital vehicle carried an array of technology demonstration payloads, featuring innovative payloads from global spacetech firms alongside a symbolic handwritten postcard signed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Following the successful deployment confirmation, the leadership at Skyroot declared the maiden orbital flight a grand success. Prime Minister Modi extended his congratulations to the engineering team, highlighting that the landmark achievement not only establishes a brand new commercial player in space transportation but also strengthens the foundation for a vibrant, privately-driven space ecosystem in India. Market analysts note that this capability will position India to offer agile, cost-effective launch options to the global small-satellite market, effectively breaking the state-led monopoly on local orbital launch services.
