The devastating floods in the state have claimed the lives of 102 people! With the recovery of one more body recently, the death toll in this year’s monsoon floods has risen to 102. According to the latest report as of August 11, around 1.12 lakh people are still affected by floods in 7 districts of the state.
According to data from the Assam State Disaster Management Authority, 25 revenue circles are under the impact of floods. Around 7,982 people are still taking shelter in 47 relief camps.
The situation continues to deteriorate in Sivasagar district. 5 revenue circles and 476 villages in the district are affected by floods, and around 5.74 lakh people have been affected as per preliminary estimates. Three revenue circles are still submerged. Around 28,356 hectares of land is underwater and 3,804 houses have been damaged. Preliminary reports also indicate the loss of around 2 lakh livestock including poultry and cattle.
The flood situation in Charaideo is also critical. 3 revenue circles and 193 villages in the district have been affected. While around 2 lakh people are affected by floods, 24 relief camps and 253 relief distribution centers are active. 22 people have died in floods in the district and 5,698 people have been rescued. Around 18,449 hectares of cropland has been submerged and 488 houses have been completely damaged.
In Jorhat, around 1.66 lakh people in 5 revenue circles and 104 villages have been affected. Around 9,659 people are taking shelter in 39 relief camps. More than 7,000 hectares of cropland in the district has been damaged or submerged. 9 people have lost their lives in the floods in the district this year.
Meanwhile, 6 revenue circles and 254 villages in Golaghat have been hit by floods. More than one lakh people have been affected in the district. Over 6,000 people are taking shelter in 50 relief camps. 8 people have died in floods in the district. The assessment of damage to affected houses is still underway.
Across the state, 2,715 villages and around 84,647 hectares of cropland have been affected by floods. As per preliminary estimates, 49 embankments have breached and 104 embankments have been damaged. In addition, 36 bridges and 1,108 roads have been damaged.
The state government has provided large quantities of relief materials for flood-affected people. This includes 48,558 quintals of rice, 10,157 quintals of pulses, 4,007 quintals of salt, 1.63 lakh litres of mustard oil and 79,534 tarpaulins.
Affected families are being given interim financial assistance of Rs 15,000 each through the Direct Benefit Transfer system. So far, 64,891 families have received this assistance. The process of disbursing aid to another 31,212 families is underway.
